The state of Origin is one of diesel delight

The hull graphics ensure the Origin 8000 catches the eye, not just fish.

A passion for offshore fishing, and serious good taste in graphics, led bluewater boatie Richard Pozzey to have this magnificent Origin 8000 HT Axis custom built.

The brief was to create an economical fishing platform for light tackle game and reef fishing, combined with some lifestyle comforts for short-term stays aboard. It had to be plate aluminium with superb performance and quality.
Long before a single piece of aluminium was cut, Richard sat down with Col Svensson from Origin Boats – he produced a blank sheet of paper and set out the design and power criteria.

First choice was a Yanmar diesel powerplant, specifically the Yanmar 6LPA six cylinder with Yanmar’s own ZT350 sterndrive leg.

Basic parameters were set at eight metres length, 18° deadrise, high sheerline, 500 litres of fuel for a 500 nautical mile range, four bunks, and the ability to stay at sea for three- to four-day long fishing trips. Finally the boat had to be road legal for towing without the need for special permits.

The Origin that sits alongside the dock today is a customised work of art that exceeds Pozzey’s expectations in every way.

The Yanmar sterndrive option has proven the perfect power mate, pumping out 315hp at 3800 rpm. The minimum outboard power previously fitted to an Origin 8000 has been a single 300 that delivered 23 knots cruise with consumption of 35 litres per hour, whereas the Yanmar 6LPA achieves 22 knots for between 20 to 26 litres per hour.

A six-cylinder 315hp Yanmar diesel is the lifeblood of this bluewater beauty.

The engine boasts a 4.2-litre displacement for sustained torque through the mid-rev range while still offering an impressive power-to-weight advantage. The ZT350 has a hydraulic clutch, affording smooth gear shifting, while the two counter-rotating propellers bring efficient acceleration and tracking.

'Because the weight of the sterndrive engine is fixed lower in the hull, it has much better handling,' Pozzey said.
'It’s a beautiful riding boat as the power on tap allows the boat to effortlessly plough through blue water. We can set the throttle and let the engine do its job … there’s no need to be on and off the power adjusting for each wave.'
