Powerboat racing can be a cruel sport

Brisbane based Formula 1 drivers Bob and David Trask went into the second UIM F1 race in China with justifiably high expectations. Coming off a second place just a fortnight prior, David Trask was mentally set to take the step up and go one place better at the Shenzhen UIM F1 GP.

Motor sport can be such a cruel sport.

The Trask Development Corporation team hit their first obstacle in the opening practice session when Dave Trask holed his best hull and had to turn to the backup F1 boat to get through the weekend. As a consequence of limited preparation, David Trask wound up qualifying well down the field in 17th position managing to run just a handful of laps in the second and final qualifying session.

Bob Trask fared much better qualifying in 13th position. Over past UIM F1 rounds, Bob Trask has started mid field and managed to work his way through the field as the race unfolds to finish amongst the points.

The UIM F1 GP at Shenzhen would reveal a similar game plan as the team re-grouped overnight.

As the Shenzhen F1 GP got underway, David Trask did indeed make a strong running through the field.

'Coming from the back of the pack is hard work,' David Trask said. ‘It’s tough enough chasing the front runners when you are right up at the front, but the further you wind up down the grid the harder it is to actually make ground on the leaders.'

David Task’s mighty effort came to an abrupt end on lap 40 of the 65 lap GP when he blew an engine. Although David Trask had worked his way into 10th position it was a case of race over!

This left the fate of the Trask Development Corporation team squarely in the hands of Bob Trask.

Lady luck was certainly frowning on the two Aussies from Brisbane as on lap 41 there was a coming together of Bob Trask and Stan Kourtsenovski in the Tamoil F1 boat.

Bob Trask’s GTR race hull was badly holed and sunk. Race over!

'This was one weekend where the team worked really hard but it was all for no return,' Bob Trask said.

'It was a tough day at the office.'

'We went into the second F1 race in China with a lot of confidence based on our great result in the previous round. But as it turned out anything that could go wrong, went wrong.'

'And we came away from the Shenzhen race with two busted boats. But we will certainly re-group and launch our usual professional assault in the closing two rounds in the UAE at Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.'

At the completion six rounds, David Trask is in fifth position on the Drivers World Championship Points table, Bob Trask is in 15th position.

The next round of the 2008 UIM F1 World Championship is to be contested in Abu Dhabi UAE on December 6th.

Trask Brothers Racing will be contesting the final round of the Australian F1 Superboat series to be conducted on the Gold Coast on November 1st & 2nd.
