Bass Yabby
. .
A man from Jacana has received a six month jail sentence and been fined $2,000 after being caught with nearly 4,000 Bass yabbies from Western Port. The man pleaded guilty to six charges including taking fish for sale, using commercial fishing equipment and exceeding the catch limit. In addition to his jail sentence and fine, the Magistrate ordered his boat and contents, worth approximately $8,000 to be forfeited.

Bass yabbies are an essential part of the food chain in Western Port. In particular, they are an important food source for migratory birds that frequent the area, so it is vital people stay within the daily bag limits and only take what they need for personal recreational use.
